Peace lily
Hello friends!
Hoping you are all having a calm and sunny spring. Don’t forget to hydrate!
The Lily
Oh peace lily, who art in the window, which has been brought from apartment to apartment, shifted from sunlit spot to sunlit spot, in search of a forever home.
Your leaves have been bumped, bruised, and bent, your soil neglected then overwatered, yet still you thrive. I have combed you free of dead leaves and given you the best window shelf which overlooks the road.
Oh to be as resilient as the gentle lily, who perks up and rejoices mere moments after water is tipped into her porcelain pot. She has now pushed up light green tendrils, soft as satin, resplendent in her freshness.
Perhaps you would have done better with a more responsible caregiver, someone who could repot you and stick to a regular watering schedule, give you the right fertilizer and mist your leaves. But instead, we have each other. You have graced me with your patience.
Give me this day a moment of peace in the presence of your greenest splendor, before I brush past you to get to the laundry hamper, sweaty and tired from work.
Forgive me, lily, for my sporadic watering, as I forgive myself for neglecting my own body in a similar fashion. Lead me not to the demanding monstera or the gaudy camellia; deliver me from the confusion of orchids and the silent, calculating deception of bonsais: for your joy is simple and direct. You will tell me, in no uncertain terms, when you need water again, and give everything in return.
You were made thus, and thus you will remain. May you be content in the soft window light, from which you shall not be moved for a long, long while.
Amen
Thank you for reading!
-Astrid
